Is Your Carbon Monoxide Detector Functioning Properly?

Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless so you don't notice it accumulating. The combination of poor indoor ventilation, malfunction, and lax maintenance can result in the gas building up to extremely dangerous levels. It makes you feel drowsy, then it puts you to sleep, and finally it kills you.

Your home’s carbon monoxide detector has the potential to save your life as well as the lives of your loved ones and pets. Yet merely installing a carbon monoxide detector will not suffice. It is critically important that you test the alarm to ensure its functionality. A few things you can do to ensure your CO detectors are working properly are found here.

Test the CO Detectors Regularly
It’s a good idea to test your CO detector monthly. Start by pressing the “test” button to ensure the siren works. It will tell you if the device has enough electrical power from the batteries or outlet. If the detector does not produce a high-pitched beeping noise, it needs new batteries or should be replaced.

Also check each of your devices regularly to ensure that they’re free of dust. Before you crank the heat this winter, be sure you have installed and tested a carbon monoxide detector to prevent tragedy.
